Remembering Those Days
Part Two
Random Thoughts

Note : I hope reading this one could bring back your childhood days to you and make you smile when you complete reading it!

I still remember when I went to my dad took me to the first movie in some theater. Though, ‘The Exorcist’ and ‘Enter the Dragon’ were my first two movies of my life. I was too young to remember them. My mother still recalls that while they were watching the movie which was touted scariest movie of that time, she used to cover my eyes with her fingers whenever some scary scene came on screen, but I was pushing aside her fingers and watching it.

I have watched some wonderful movies with him like, Gandhi, Omar Mukthar – The Lion of the Desert, 100 Rifles, Where eagles dare?, Eagles have landed and Guns of Navorane to name a few that I still remember even to this day. Sadly, some of those theaters have gone forever.

He always used to get me some snacks to eat while returning from his unscheduled duty hours as a cop. If he didn’t have money, then he would at least get me some coconut ‘Burfi’. He used to ask my mother ‘Is Kuladu sleeping? Wake him up!’ ( Kuladu means a small fellow). I still remember my fights with him for getting my first comic books. The joy I got when he bought some comics for me one night. He was like the light house for me…showing me the light in the darkness! I cried like anything when he left this world. I even scolded God for doing that. He was the best dad any son could get. I will always be proud of him and miss him at the same time.

I remember those nights during power cuts, we friends in the police quarters played hide and seek in the moonlight. It was wonderful. Also, we played cricket and when the rubber ball landed in one particular aunt’s house. She used to cut them into two with a knife. Awwh! We hated her for doing this every time. Her pretty daughter was unlike her mother. She used to return our rubber ball back to us.

How can I forget my crush on a girl who stayed in the building opposite to ours in the quarters? I used to sit by the bedroom window and steal a glance at her every now and then. I thought even she knew it. I was really scared when she came home along with her sister. My heart started beating more than the normal when my mother called me. That girl gave me some sweets on her birthday. Also I got the sad news that they were vacating that house and going away. This incident found a place in my short story ‘The Window’ which I happened to write many years later.

I still remember one Saturday afternoon, I and my dad went to purchase our first black and white television set. In those days, hardly a few owned a television set. Before dad could purchase it, we used to go to our neighbors upstairs to watch Mahabarath, Ramayan, movies and some serials on Saturdays and Sundays. This neighbor was a peculiar person, who had a hobby of keeping all kinds of animals at home. He even had two monkeys which some how managed to escape. So, the smell in his house was really awful, but we had no other way left to watch our favorite programs and movies. There was a rumor that he had killed a cat sometime, so he got stomach pain every now and then.

When Dad bought home our own TV I was so glad. I had my fav programs like ‘Giant Robot’ which came every Thursday evenings. Sundays were like heaven for kids like us. Almost first half day was jam packed with nice programs like, ‘He-man’, ‘Ramayana’ or ‘Mahabharath’, ‘Street Hawk’, ‘Star trek’, and ‘Spiderman – animated series’ and in the later afternoon ‘Vikram and Bettal’. We got to see other language movies with sub titles on Sunday afternoons.

My dad used to give me pocket money of ten paisa, twenty paisa, etc. It got me some sweets from the nearby provisional store. When He gave me one rupee, it was like a jackpot to me. I used to like going bike rides with him. He had a second hand Bajaj scooter which would turn off when the signal turned green. But he still liked this scooter, which remained with him till end. Later, we sold it to our cousins and they have been keeping it like an antique piece for many years.

I used to love those days when I used catch fever and cold. My mother used to take great care of me during those times. Also my father used to bring home all those wonderful things I loved to eat like Carrot Halwa. He used to tell me that sweet vendors mixed all the remaining sweets into it, so that I could stop having it. But I still loved having it.

During my school days, I helped one of my friend in match box collection. We nick named him as ‘Booth Kutti’ ( means Small Ghost ). We both used to roam around in parks, railway tracks looking for different match boxes lying around to add to the collection. Also I had my bicycle by then. One afternoon, we both were busy searching for the match boxes, when a police man walked towards us and said, “My sir wants to see you!”. We both went along with him, and saw my dad seated on one of the benches there, smoking a cigarette. ‘What are you doing here?’ He asked me. I told him that we both came to the City Central Library. He gave me twenty rupees and told me to have my favorite Masala Dosa.

In those days, we didn’t have a mobile phone to stay connected with our friends. If a friend wanted to see me then he would near my house and shout my name from below. I would open the window or door and answer him. Then I would join him in whatever we were to do together. I also remember those days when I had volunteered to collect money for the blind kids in our school. I used to go along with my friend asking for money from the people in the street, shops, etc. We used to get certificates after submission of our collection to the school. We used to go out for collection even during rainy days as well. As we remembered the blind kids and felt for them.

I had discovered my hidden talents one after the other during my school days. I started writing stories. Then I used to read wonderful poems by Rabindranath Tagore, William Wordsworth, Keats and I thought why not I try my hand in poetry. It was with these great poets’ inspiration that I started writing poems. Then during my fourth standard, I started doing drawing and colouring. One of my cousin brothers taught me water colour painting. That year, I went on to win the first prize in my school in the drawing and painting contest. When I took home the prize, my parents were surprised.

To be continued….
