Swamy Becomes A Hero*

>> Sunday, December 16, 2007

* Partly based on a true incident.

It was one winter Sunday morning, in a small village.Swamy was walking on the tracks. The event that had happened yesterday come in front of his eyes like a movie on 70 mm silver screen.Swamy had failed in the maths exam by just two marks. Fearing scolding from his father, he had forged his signature on the report card. Unfortunately, his class teacher caught him and took him to head master. The head master called his father. His father’s face turned red when he came to know what had happened.

“If he is not punished for this act today, tomorrow he may grow up and become a thief!” Said the head master.

“Sir, I never thought that he would such a thing,” His father said, “I’m really very sorry on his behalf. Please go ahead and punish him the way you think is fit for this cowardly act.”

Swamy was made to kneel down in front of head master’s room and write an imposition that he won’t repeat such a thing again, one thousand times.

“A thief….?...me….?.. No, NEVER!” Swamy cried.

Suddenly, he noticed that the track was out of alignment at one spot and knew it was a danger sign. Swamy thought hard how he could stop the train, which he knew would be coming at this particular time. He removed his shirt and started running on the railway track hoping to stop the train.

After having run for sometime, he sighted the train.Swamy frantically waved his shirt to attract the train driver’s attention, but the later was confused. The driver didn't know if the kid running towards the train was crazy or if he was trying to commit suicide. After applying brakes, the irritated driver alighted to give a tongue-lashing to Swamy.

"You Idiot! What the hell do you think you were doing?" He cried looking at him.

Swamy was out of his breath to reply him.He just pointed his finger in the direction of the tracks. The driver went to check and when he came back, he had a big smile on his face.

“Son, you have saved many lives today,” He said giving him a big hug, “You’ve become our hero.”

The passengers started celebrating in joy. The news spread like a forest fire in the village.

Soon almost whole village gathered in front of the train, including his class teacher and the head master.

“Swamy has become a hero by saving…how many lives did you say?” Asked the head master looking at the railway guard.

“Over 1,500..” He replied.

“…saving 1,500 passengers traveling in this train. I’m really proud to have a student like him in our school.Infact; he has become a role model for our village. I’m sure that he will grow up to be a great man, whom everyone shall admire. On this behalf, I’m declaring a holiday tomorrow for our school.” He cried at the top of his voice.

It was followed by a loud applause.

Swamy’s father had a proud smile on his face as he led his son back to home.“Son, I’m really proud of you,” He said, “I have arranged special math’s coaching class for you. So that you won’t have to forge my signature again. Also mother is preparing your fav. Gulab Jamun at home.”

He added.Swamy’s mouth started watering when he heard Gulab Jamun.
